RATING

Unlike standard projectors that are designed to stay in one place, portable projectors (also known as pocket projectors or pico projectors) are small, lightweight, and portable, essentially built for carrying around. The Dangbei N2 Smart Projector falls right in the middle of these categories – it’s portable enough to move around, but it isn’t particularly a pico projector, like the Optoma ML750 or the ViewSonic M1 mini projectors.

The Dangbei N2 projector, which comes with Netflix and other streaming apps built-in, is lightweight, connects with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and has an auto-focus function that automatically adjusts to the screen size; in addition to auto keystone and obstacle avoidance, among other features that deliver a sharp and clear picture.

If you’re in the market for a fairly affordable smart projector that lets you watch your favorite teams play or binge on your favorite streams on Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube videos outside, this is the projector for you.

The N2 Smart projector is available in black and white color options, and the tabletop stand is sold separately. What we like

A bright, colorful picture

The Dangbei N2 Smart’s main strength is its surprisingly bright out-of-the-box image, which pops fine and serves colorful scenes well. While it doesn’t get as colorful as the Optoma HD143X, it’s still better than what we’ve seen on some projectors that cost even more. Watching Dark Winds streamed on Netflix in HD and HDR10, the colors look punchy and crisp. In The Snow Girl, all scenes across Málaga, reds looked accurate, although they were a little too vivid.

Dangbei’s projector does a fine job of displaying sports. The standard mode offers the best picture and motion handling when streaming a football match streamed via a Samsung S24 smartphone – a welcome result as there are no motion adjustments to work with in the setup menu.

The N2 Smart’s pair of 6W speakers with Dolby Digital Plus audio delivers audible audio tones, but not enough to fill a big room. Still, they are solid enough considering the projector’s size. If you need better audio, you can connect the projector to your home theatre system via Bluetooth or the 3.5mm audio output at the back. If you don’t have a home theatre system already, even a small sound bar can deliver a wider soundstage with good bass.

Lots of Smart features and adjustments

The auto-focus feature is one of my favorite features on this projector. No matter what size wall, sheet, screen – whatever screen you’re projecting onto – the Dangbei N2 Smart projector automatically from as low as 45 inches up to 120 inches wide. The Nebula Cosmos 4K SE Smart Projector is around the same size, but can project up to 200 inches, only that it costs much more for the 4K capability. Still, for home use, 120 max of screen is enough to enjoy movies and sports comfortably.

Other features on this projector include auto Keystone correction, which ensures that you get perfect screen dimensions even when projecting onto an uneven wall. It works within seconds, so unlike some projectors, you don’t have to struggle with picking up the Dangbei N2 and moving it to a different spot.

The Dangbei N2 comes with several web apps that you can use to stream content, including Netflix, Disney, Hulu, YouTube, and others. YouTube TV is my personal favorite on the projector as it includes TV channels like ESPN, Fox Sports, HGTV, and the network news channels.

What we don’t like

Not compatible with Amazon’s Alexa

There’s very little I don’t like about this smart projector, however, there are a few things to know before you buy it. If you run a dedicated Amazon Alexa ecosystem around your house, this may not be the best projector for you. The N2 Smart does not offer support for Google Assistant, nor is it compatible with Amazon’s Alexa. This isn’t a dealbreaker for me, maybe it is for you.

Dangbei N2 Smart Projector Review: Verdict

The Dangbei N2 Smart projector has a great picture out of the box, has great sound quality, is easy to set up, and offers lots of smart features and controls without being too expensive. This is a great option if you’re looking for a portable smart projector that you can control from your phone, and cast content from multiple devices via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

The incorporation of Netflix and other web apps makes this an effortless way to watch TV shows and other content without having to connect cables. It’s especially a great choice if you love to host people for Sunday football games, backyard movie nights, or other watch parties. Just remember to pair it with a soundbar or home theatre for immersive audio and deep bass.

Overall, the Dangbei N2 Smart is a perfectly fine projector for a palatable price, but it offers a brighter colorful picture than its cost competitors at this price point. Of course, rival LG and Samsung projectors are better value, but they cost much more than you’re paying here.
