Released in 1994, Ruby Vroom introduced Soul Coughing’s genre-blurring fusion of jazz, rock, hip-hop, and avant-garde sampling. The album weaves together loop-based compositions—featuring snippets of Raymond Scott, Toots and the Maytals, Howlin’ Wolf, and the Andrews Sisters—alongside guitar-driven tracks (Janine, Moon Sammy) and upright bass-heavy arrangements that reference everything from Courageous Cat to Thelonious Monk.

Though a cult favorite, Ruby Vroom remained an underground success, selling around 70,000 copies by 1996. In September 2024, the band announced a remastered 30th-anniversary edition on Jimmy Kimmel Live, featuring bonus tracks from the era, set for release on CD and vinyl.
