An Appalachian organizer’s excavation of the past, her own and her people’s, to spark a collective fight for a future where we all have what we need and deserve

In Song for a Hard-Hit People, Beth Howard shares her story of growing up in Appalachian Kentucky―the economic struggles, trauma, and ever-present sexism along with the loving care of her close-knit rural community. These complex people shaped Howard’s sense of justice and solidarity, and taught her about the inextricable bonds working-class people share, despite our differences. But her childhood also left her with emotional wounds that threatened to destroy the life she built for herself. While healing her wounds is deeply personal, there’s no separating it from the people and place that made her.

Appalachia is often framed as a place to escape from, where people are hateful, lazy, and bring tragedy upon themselves. But in her quest to understand her home and her people, Howard uncovers the powerful history of white Appalachians fighting alongside Black and Brown people, pushing back against billionaires who gain power by using racism to divide them. Appalachia, she realizes, has not only been hit hard; it is the place to wage a freedom struggle.

Too many of us are denied the basic necessities of life: somewhere decent to live, good food to eat, health care that doesn’t break the bank, jobs that don’t kill us. As Howard reminds us, we haven’t got a chance―unless we organize.

In the midst of divisive rhetoric, violent repression, and grifters writing elegies, may this story be a song.

Beth Howard is the Appalachia Peoples Union Director for Showing Up for Racial Justice, the largest national organization bringing white people into the fight for racial and economic justice. Originally from Eastern Kentucky, she has organized throughout the South for two decades. She currently lives in Lexington, KY.

Awesome, inexpensive alternative to name-brands!
Size: 36 sqft
Awesome. Stuck well with alcohol prep and time to let liquid flash-off. Very consistent, piece to piece. Backing peeled easily when desired. Compared to Amazon Basics, the butyl seemed a little thicker (infinitesimally) and stickier, foil was less thick than Amazon Basics. Very good value. Started with my nice car, but after completing project, sound dampened all cars in the immediate family it made such a noticeable difference in sound level and quality of music from soeakers. Recommended!

Great sound deadening material with easy installation.
Size: 36 sqft, Size: 36 sqft
This sound-deadening mat was easy to install on the roof of my Toyota FJ Cruiser. It significantly stiffened the roof and dramatically reduced the wind noise inside the vehicle caused by my roof rack and lights. I can actually carry on a conversation again without shouting while driving on the freeway. The 36-square-foot package was enough for my application, with about three sheets left over. The tiles adhered well to the metal without any special surface preparation. I only wish I had done this sooner.

Gama Sonic Solar Lights: Built to Last and Guaranteed
Number of Items: 2
These lights are nice and bright and stay on all night. I have other Gama Sonic solar lights also. One of them, which I didn't buy from Amazon, had a problem so I contacted Gama Sonic directly because they have a 2-year warranty. They responded immediately and I got it fixed and now I'm happy with it. I will keep buying their solar lights because they make good quality solar lights and have a 2-year warranty.

Very strong construction--no plastic
Number of Items: 2
Expensive, but appears to be very well made. The lights are made of aluminum, so the support is sturdier than the usual plastic. The poles are in two parts, so you have a choice of heights the light is above the surface. Battery replacements are expensive, but you should get two years or more from a battery. You have a choice of a quite bright white light or a less bright yellow light.
